Wow, all I can say is just….. Wow

In what will surely end up being one of the most interesting (to say the least) matches of World Cup 2006, 4 red and 16 yellow cards were shown in the Netherlands vs. Portugal game today. I believe that ties the record for most cards shown in a World Cup match.
I wandered over to Kells to check out the match because ABC, in all it’s glorious wisdom, thought it was better to show info-mercials rather than show the game. Normally I consider Kells an extremely shitty place to watch games, but I was impressed today. Instead of the two tiny flat panels they usually have, they brought out the big guns: a giant projector screen and surround sound. Anyway, the place was packed with Netherlands supporters, and I’m not talking about some orange shirts here and there. I’m talking about tulip growing, cheese wheel making, wooden shoe wearing, Dutch speaking Oranje supporters. I’m not sure where they came from, but there was a shitload of ‘em and they were vocal.
I expected an exciting game, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. There was some good playing coming from both sides until the ref completely lost control of the field in the second half. Ahhh, the best and the worst that soccer has to offer all in one exciting action packed game: powerful shots, dives, beautiful goals, headbutts, ball control, spikes to the groin, elbows to the face, pushing, shoving, bitching, moaning… What more could you ask for?

And in other news, England phoned in another thoroughly boooooring 1-0 win against Ecuador earlier in the day. They will go on to play Portugal in the next round. I want England to win, but they can’t seem to find the back of the net to save their lives. They’re lucky that two of Portugals top names will be suspended for their match on Saturday
